The adoption of new technologies often faces a significant challenge: the reluctance of experts to embrace innovations even when they are known to be technically efficient. An interesting approach to understanding this issue revolves around evaluating the legitimacy of innovations within established social norms. We explore this perspective using the example of open-label placebo adoption. Open-label placebos entail the use of inert substances, openly disclosed, to trigger a placebo effect. By examining physicians’ perceptions of open-label placebos in chronic pain treatment, we develop practical insights for promoting institutionally misaligned innovations among experts.
